Getting tired of the same old grilled foods? We love steaks, burgers and chicken thighs just as much, if not more, than the next person, but summertime cookouts can get old fast. When it comes to grilling, creativity goes a long way and the more creative you get, the more your palate will thank you — at least we hope so! Don’t put your taste buds to sleep this summer, the next time you have a hankering to fire up the grill, throw some mussels and clams on it instead of meat!

How To Grill Mussels & Clams

It’s entirely more simple than you’re probably thinking. In fact, many people say it’s even easier than steaming them (which is generally how they’re cooked prior to consumption). All you need to do is light the grill, turn the knobs to medium or high heat, wait a few minutes and clean the grates. Then toss them either right into the grill or into an aluminum foil pan, close the cover and wait roughly 5-10 minutes.

Once the molluscs open up, they’re ready to eat!

How To Prepare Grilled Mussels & Clams

Believe it or not, you don’t need to do much. Grilled mussels and grilled clams taste great right off the grill without any preparation whatsoever. Just be careful, those shells will be hot!

However, we do highly recommend melting butter and thinly sliced garlic in a small saucepan and pouring over the mussels or clams before eating.

Another option is to serve individual butter and garlic portions in tiny bowls and dipping the mussels or clams into the warm butter as they are de-shelled, just like you would do for a fresh, steamed lobster!
